Use These Tips for Interior House Painting in San Ramon

Use These Tips for Interior House Painting in San RamonMuch house painting in San Ramon occurs on the interiors. It's probably because they're less laborious to work on compared to the exteriors. Plus, you won't have to encounter some weather elements such as sunlight, the wind, and rain. It doesn't mean, though, that it's going to be a piece of cake -- it still requires meticulous work if you want to leave your walls with a professional-like paint finish.

1. There is no shortcut to properly preparing the surface. This first step is the key towards a smooth paint finish. No matter how good your paint is, they will still be no good if you apply them on a dirty surface. About 80% of the paint job will be concentrated on prepping the surface. It may not be the most fun thing to do, but hey, someone's got to do it! Here are the steps to follow:

  • Clean the surface.
  • Scrape off flaking or peeling paint.
  • Any cracks, holes, gaps and other surface flaws should be repaired
  • After repairing, sand the surface to smoothen it.
  • Prime the surface if needed.

2. Speaking of prime, this part is only optional, or when the situation calls for it. But applying a primer will make a big difference in your painting job! It gives many benefits -- including blocking stains, enabling easier application of a light-colored paint over a darker one, and allowing the topcoat to adhere easier. If you have a problem with mold and mildew, look for the mildew-resisting primer.

For those who don't want to apply a separate primer, they can buy paints with the primer already in them. They will be a great time- and money-saver.

3. Use drop cloths to cover the floors and immovable items. It's always preferable to use canvas instead of plastic.

4. Use extension poles instead of mounting on step ladders for painting higher walls or ceilings. For painting rooms that are 8 or 9 feet tall, use extension poles whose length can vary from 18 to 36 inches.

5. If you're painting with rollers, use a five-bucket gallon and a paint grid, instead of a paint tray.

6. It's always better to paint the corners first before painting the entire surface, than the other way around. This will help cover the lap marks.

7. Choosing a paint color will depend on either one of the two things: your preference and the room itself. The general rule of thumb is that lighter colors give the room an illusion of a bigger and higher space, while darker colors will give spacious rooms a receding effect.

When you feel that your room is too bright (due to many windows/big windows or too much lighting), you may want to apply a darker color to tone down the brightness or use the right combination of dark and light colors to create balance (for example, painting an accent wall).

Do not be afraid to incorporate your personal preferences (such as your favorite flower or art piece) to the color palette. After all, it's your space, and you want it to be a reflection of yourself as much as possible.

8. After choosing the color, the next step is choosing the finish. Flat paints give off no sheen at all and are usually painted on rooms like living rooms and bedrooms. They are the cheapest and the easiest to apply. Flat paints may be excellent in hiding imperfections, but they are hard to clean when soiled.

Paints with an eggshell finish are recommended for spaces that often get wet or dirty, such as kitchens, bathrooms, and hallways.

Semi-gloss or glossy paints are among the paints that emit the most sheen. They are preferably applied on doors, frames, banisters, shelves, and wood furnishings. Applying these kinds of paints on the entire wall can be fine, but because they are too shiny, they reflect a lot of light which can create a glare in your eyes.

Following these tips will enable you to achieve the professional finish you've wanted in house painting in San Ramon. Gaining additional tips from professional contractors, such as Custom Painting, Inc., or have them do the work for you which will make your job even easier.
