How to Prepare Your House Exterior for Home Painting in Alamo

How to Prepare Your House Exterior for Home Painting in Alamo

Knowing how to prepare your house exterior for home painting in Alamo can make a huge difference in the results. Chances are you may want to allow a professional painter do the actual painting, but there are things you can do to help your paint job last longer.

Pay attention to the following trouble spots and you will find you have to paint the exterior less often.

  • Determine when your home was built. Why is it important? Homes built prior to 1979 may have used lead-based paint. Your local health department will be able to provide information on how to handle lead paint removal. If you do not want to remove the paint, you may want to hire a professional to take care of this for you prior to having them paint the exterior of your home.
  • Many homes have problems with paint not adhering to the bottom of the garage door or along decks and patios. You can help these areas by leaving a gap between the wood and the horizontal surface as well as applying paintable water repellent at the bottom of the wood, up to 16 inches.
  • Scrape away any peeling paint before beginning your home painting in Alamo. You can remove paint by scraping, sandpaper or using a heat gun to soften the paint so it is easier to remove. If you use a heat gun, however, you will want to be careful not to melt weather stripping.
  • Pay attention to the condition of the wood while you scrape. Sand weathered wood that is firm because weathered wood does not hold the paint well. Soft areas will need to be removed and replaced before painting. For small areas, you may be able to get away with using a two-part filler but for larger areas you will want to remove the wood entirely.
  • Reapply any wood siding or trim pieces that may be loose. This will create an even surface as well as ensuring water does not get behind the wood.
  • Prime the wood surfaces after scraping off the loose paint and before you begin painting the exterior of your home again. Be sure to read the instructions on how long to allow the primer to dry before you can apply the first coat of color. For longer wearing paint, you will want to apply a second coat of paint.
  • If the paint is not peeling, you may be able to simply clean the surface. Use a pressure washer with the right type of detergent. Begin at the top of the house and power clean the exterior. If you have a mold problem, consider using a detergent with mildewcide or bleach water (1 quart bleach to 3 quarts water) to clean the surface. Be sure to rinse well.
  • Cover up any landscaping near your home to keep paint from dripping on it.

When you search for a professional painter and money is a factor, you can ask them if you can prepare the exterior for house painting in Alamo. They may reduce the cost of painting your home.
