House Painting Pleasant Hill: Refreshing Your Home's ExteriorDoing an exterior house painting in Pleasant Hill has the ability to make your home look fresh and brand new without spending a huge amount of money. The right cleaning and preparation on your home's exterior surface will always be an unbeatable factor for achieving the optimum results for your painting job.

It is not only for aesthetic reasons why homeowners choose to refresh a home's exterior, but also because of practical reasons. If you want your home to have a longer-lasting useful life, steps should be taken to preserve the exterior. If the exterior surface looks worn out, outdated, or suffers damage, this calls for repairing and repainting it.

Repainting your home not only helps make your house look good as new, it also helps increase your home's resale value and can increase its chance of being sold.

Here are some simple tips to help you refresh your home's exterior:

1. Choose the best quality paint and primer (if necessary) you can afford. To save you from guessing troubles, rely only on the reputable painting contractors like Kelly-Moore Paints, Sherwin-Williams, Valspar, Benjamin Moore, or Behr.

The colors of the paint will be entirely up to you, or up to the neighborhood, the surrounding landscape, the architectural style of your home, or the color of your home's roof. These factors will help you in deciding what paint color to buy.

Typically flat and satin sheens are good for siding and stucco, while glossier paints are reserved mostly for shutters and trim.

2. Once you've decided on the paint quality, color, and sheen, it's time to find out how much paint you are going to need. If you live in an average-sized one-floored home (about 2,100 square feet) which also has a flat exterior surface, you may need 12 gallons of paint of good quality. A gallon of paint will cover 200 to 350 square feet, given if you're going to paint the surface in two coats. But if your house has two or more stories, or has a textured surface, you may need to buy more than what you think you need. You can use the leftover paint for touchups. Of course, if the paint wasn’t used and the can remains unopened, you may also be able to return it to the store.

3. Lay drop cloths (preferably canvas) on anything that you don't want to get spattered with paint: your car, the driveway, and the shrubs, for instance. Remove all fixtures such as light fixtures, electrical covers, plumbing outlets, and address numbers.

4. For light cleaning on the surface, use only a water and sponge. For cleaning more stubborn surfaces, remove them with a pressure washer (use caution when using it).

5. If you spot mildew in some areas, you should use a solution consisting of water and bleach (sometimes a trisodium phosphate or TSP is added). Use a long-handed brush to clean off the mildew. Rinse the surface thoroughly and let it dry.

6. For peeling and flaking paint, scrape it using a large scraper, then sand using fine-grit sandpaper to achieve a smoother surface.

7. If the surface has obvious surface flaws like cracks and nail grooves, repair them by using the exterior spackling paste (follow the label instructions) and a putty knife. Let the compound dry. Then sand off the excess dried compound. Fix cracked joints in areas (like window frames) with paintable caulk. Let it dry and sand off the excess caulk.

8. Prime the surface. This step is optional but if you want better topcoat adhesion, the primer will help achieve this effect.

9. Paint the surface. If you want to make an impression on visitors or onlookers, paint the door with a contrasting color. For example, when you've painted your house white, paint the door with deep blue or crimson. Use a paint with a shiny finish e.g., eggshell, satin, semi-glossy or glossy.

For a more appealing and refreshed look, select a different color for the trim, columns, and accents. Make sure that the color complements your house's body color. Painting the trim will add a punch of color to your home's exterior and make it more eye-catching. Painting the trim in different colors will also help bring focus to some architectural details.

Let the paint dry. Then enjoy looking at your newly-painted home!

Refreshing a home's exterior does not have to be too expensive. House painting in Pleasant Hill can transform your home's old exterior into a newer, more vibrant look.
