House Painting Pleasant Hill - Painting Walls with Smoke Smell

House Painting Pleasant Hill - Painting Walls with Smoke SmellHouse painting in Pleasant Hill can solve many problems on the surface including smoke stains and smells.

So how did the smoke smell and stains get into the walls, and why do the smell particular still persists? Smoke can penetrate through the paint and then into the pores of the drywall. Smoke's smells and stains also bleed through the drywall and out on the surface.

The first thing to do before painting is to wash the walls properly. If possible use a detergent or any other aggressive cleaning agent in order to remove the smoke stains and smells.

Here's more on how to get the smoke smell out of your home simply by painting the walls.

1. Make sure that your home is properly ventilated by opening all the doors and windows of the house. Place fans in a strategic location (one corner of your room or near the opened doors and windows) to make your room more airy as well as to drive the smoky smells out of the house.

2. Move any furniture away from the walls, and take down pictures and other wall hangings as well as outlet covers and faceplates. Remove the curtains, carpets, linens, etc. (if you have them) as well. It's also important to wash and clean the fabrics since they may have the smoky odor in them, too.

3. Cover the floor with drop cloths. It is better to use canvas because plastic is easy to slip on if paint gets on them.

4. Wear a pair of rubber gloves when you clean the walls. Use a cleaning solution consisting of TSP (trisodium phosphate) and warm water. Mix them together in a bucket -- make sure you follow the label instructions. Have a second bucket of plain water for rinsing the sponge.

5. Soak the sponge with the TSP solution and wash the walls. After that, rinse the sponge then dip it again into the bucket with the TSP solution. Clean the walls all over again. When the TSP solution becomes brown, discard it and prepare a new batch of the TSP solution.

Wash the walls as many times as needed until the walls are completely free of the stain and odor.

6. After washing, rinse the walls thoroughly. Let them dry completely.

7. Once the walls have dried, check them for any surface flaws like cracks and nail grooves. If any, repair these flaws by filling them with spackling compound. You should use a putty knife to apply the spackling compound into the surface flaws. Allow the spackling compound to dry. Once dried, sand off the excess spackling compound by using fine-grit sandpaper. Clean off the sanding debris from the floor by sweeping or by removing them with a damp, clean cloth.

8. There are stain-blocking primers on the market that are formulated to prevent the smoke stains and smells from bleeding through the topcoat. Coat the surfaces with this type of primer using a brush or a roller. Let the first coat of primer dry. Apply a second coat, and allow it again to dry completely.

9. Apply a topcoat of paint to the surface. Allow the paint to dry completely according to the paint can’s instructions.

10. If possible, apply a second coat, then leave it for 24 hours to dry completely.

11. Replace the outlet covers and put back the picture frames, other wall hangings, furniture and the drapes. Your room should look and smell better.

There's nothing more annoying than having to deal with the smoke stains and odors every day. It can even be potentially dangerous especially if you or any members of your household suffer from respiratory problems. That's why it's important to get rid of the smoke stains and smells by house painting in Pleasant Hill. Not only it will make your house look good again, but it will also make it a safer place to live.
